Talk about it in The Hawkeye Lounge

As the focus turns to the Class of 2011 following signing day, there is one junior in the state of Iowa creating a lot of buzz at the moment. That is 6-foot-6, 218-pound Christian French, a versatile multi-sport athlete at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School. In recent weeks, French has added scholarship offers from the football programs at both Iowa and Iowa State.

Christian French has offers from Iowa and Iowa State.
"Iowa offered on Monday," said French. "They let my football coach know, so I called and talked to Coach Morgan and Coach Ferentz on the phone. They said they've been looking at me for a while now and wanted to offer me a scholarship."

The offer from the Hawkeyes comes a couple weeks after French received his first one from Iowa State in mid January. The Cedar Rapids native has been to football games at both schools in the past and was in Iowa City recently for Iowa's first junior day of the year.

"I thought it was pretty cool," French said. "I got to meet a lot of the top recruits in the Midwest and had an opportunity to see what the coaches have to say about the program. They talked about why it's a good place to come to and how they do things there. It was a good learning experience."

As a junior, French made his mark mostly as a safety for Kennedy, finishing with 64 tackles on the season, and also played some wide receiver and tailback on offense. The biggest question if he decides to go the football route is where he projects at the college level.

"The coaches have said right now it's between tight end, receiver, and defensive end," said French. "They know I'm raw, but really like my athletic ability."

French, who prefers playing offense, is also receiving some recruiting interest in basketball as well. Currently, he is staying patient as he waits to see what happens in both sports.

"Right now, I'm just waiting to see what both sides have to offer and then probably next year sometime I'll make my decision," French said. "I'm just trying to keep a level head, work as hard as I can, keep my grades up at school, and stay focused on the basketball season."

"I want to keep every door open until I start narrowing down my decision."
