Key to Diagnosing Autism

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Early intervention can make all the difference in the world for children with autism, and it's good for new parents to know the red flags, the first year is critical...
  • you want to see that your infant is looking at you
  • is interested in the sound of your voice
  • demonstrates interest in engaging with other people
  • begins to understand later on that 1st year to respond to their own name
  • be wary of the good baby syndrome
  • be wary of the inconsoleable child, who does not look to people for comfort
  • lack of language skills, excessive hand flapping, a fixation on objects, lack of eye contact
Early intervention is the key, and parents can start watching for signs soon after birth
